Latest on Tariffs

President Trump issued an Executive Order for a 10% tariff on imports from China, effective Tuesday, February 4, 2025. The tariffs are applied on top of existing tariffs. Additionally, no duty drawback is available for these tariffs and the de minimis exemption (19 U.S.C. 1321) allowing small-value shipments to enter duty-free is suspended.

President Trump also issued an Executive Order placing 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, but these tariffs have been paused for at least 30 days following Trump’s negotiations with Canadian and Mexican leaders.

The China tariffs will specifically impact kitchen equipment, supplies, and packaging. The National Restaurant Association and Connecticut Restaurant Association are collaborating with our members and supply chain partners to mitigate the impact of these tariffs while exploring potential exclusions. We will continue to monitor the negotiations between the president and leaders in Canada and Mexico.

Governor Lamont's Proposed Budget

Gov. Ned Lamont proposed a $55.2 billion, two-year budget yesterday that would loosen Connecticut's "fiscal guardrails," launch a major early childhood development initiative, provide a middle-class income tax cut and restructure hospital taxes to secure more federal aid.

The Governor's proposal is the first step in a months-long debate with lawmakers that will also include Committee recommendations and the potential for a compromise budget by early June.

Bill Tracker: Updated Weekly

The Connecticut Restaurant Association actively monitors a wide range of legislation throughout each legislative session. During the first weeks of the 2025 Legislative Session, several bills of interest were introduced. It's important to note that the introduction of a bill does not guarantee its passage.

To give you a sense of the breadth and variety of legislation we are tracking, here are just a few of the bills currently on our radar. Should any of these bills progress through the legislative process, we will provide timely updates and additional information to keep you informed. The below webpage will be updated weekly.

A reminder, the introduction of a bill does not guarantee its passage, and we will provide updates as needed.
